Hi I’m Ryan, I am Chairman of Hawkes Bay Youth Trust and I immigrated from South Africa to the Hawke’s Bay at the start of 2021. Born to a kiwi mum, it is my second stint in NZ after studying here and starting my career in Auckland, before travelling the road often travelled, through Sydney to London where I lived and worked for many years before going back to Johannesburg for 11 years. I am married to Lauren and they have three boys Jed, Daniel and Ben.
I am a commercial property developer, working for prominent local developer, Wallace Development Company, following a career in institutional banking where I worked for leading local and international banks around the world.
Community upliftment has always been part of my fabric, whilst not growing up in an environment where I had all I wanted, I was extremely fortunate to never want for much. The beauty about travel and seeing different parts of the world, is the exposure to others and gaining an appreciate for what you do have in life. Having grown up in South Africa, I have always been aware of the need to look to impact those less fortunate around me and seeing how doing a little can help someone else a lot soon became very satisfying and important to me. Most of my community works have been education focussed, as I firmly believe that this is a critical area to enable young people to reach their full potential and thereby improve and further impact their communities, in which they live.
Not long after starting a bit of community support work after settling in the Hawke’s Bay, I came across the Hawke’s Bay Youth Trust. I was immediately impressed by their team and their works. Whilst I am not familiar with the sport of boxing, I am an avid sportsman and a firm believer in the many personal benefits, which sport has for an individual. I am hugely impressed by the impact that the works of the Trust have had on the community since inception and am incredibly excited for the years ahead. Buoyed by new facilities for all our boxing gyms, we are very well placed to continue to attract great coaches who will in then further impact the youth of the Hawke’s Bay in a positive way.
Hi, my name is Andrew Sloan and I have been on the Hawke's Bay youth trust for a number of years now.
I first became involved with Giants ( Hawke's Bay youth trust) through my work when we were supporting youth who were victims of family violence through Giants classes.
I am a firm believer in "if you can make one person's life better, you can change a generation" and this is the opportunity that Hawke's Bay youth trust provides.
Belong, Believe, Become, sums it all up for me, and this is one of our mottos. My wife and I have two adult boys who have gained a lot from sport and a strong family life, which is what the youth trust strive to provide, for those who don't have this privilege. Personally, my competitive sporting days are over, but I enjoy staying fit and getting out tramping and spending time in the outdoors. I live rurally so always have plenty of things to do outdoors which I enjoy.
Hi, I’m Kirsten and I am excited about the opportunity to make a positive impact in our community. In my work life I manage a pre-employment training programme called Building Futures. We’re based in Hastings and aim to guide youth towards the achievement of skills required to gain and sustain permanent positions in the workforce.
There are natural synergies between my work and the work of the Hawkes Bay Youth Trust. As such I jumped at the chance to join the Hawkes Bay Youth Trust in the hope that my contribution can make a difference to others.
Prior to my current position and I have worked within the wider timber processing and building products industry for over 25 years. With a time spent in operational and management roles I have a good overall understanding of the many barriers that can hinder a person’s ability to shine.
My husband and I are lucky enough to have two wonderful adult children as well as being incredibly fortunate to have four beautiful grandchildren. As well as spending time with our family, I love being outdoors walking, riding my bike, or just pottering around our property.
I am a Chartered Accountant, having been director of a Hastings based Chartered Accountancy firm for over 30 years. I am a founding Trustee of HB Youth Trust and a dedicated supporter of Craig and the team. By default, I get to look after the finances!
I spent over 20 years coaching cricket in Hawkes Bay and even longer been actively involved in Church based youth ministries. So the HB Youth Trust has been a comfortable fit for me. I spent 4 years assisting the coaches at boxing classes so have experienced firsthand how powerful our programs are. For me it is not so much about boxing, but more about having the opportunity to get alongside our members and help them navigate their way through the early part of their lives and provide them with tools to be even greater citizens.
My wife & I have 4 adult children whom we still enjoy hanging out with. We love to travel, and I am still a keen runner and golfer.
