Coach
Hi I’m Seamus, I coach the morning classes, that are targeted to the public, who come together for various reasons, mainly health and well-being. I have been involved since the inception of Hawkes Bay Youth Trust in 2015, after moving to Hawkes Bay and after some volunteer coaching at Otahuhu Boxing, I answered an advert for coaches, and I have never left! Nearly 10 years and counting.
In my day job, I am a land surveyor, and have previously coached Martial Arts and am an avid hunter when I get the chance to go bush.
I not only coach but enjoy learning and have learnt so much during my time, including physical and mental limits of myself, people management, but most of all I have witnessed how amazing people are and how small influences can make a massive difference to people’s lives.
Coach
Hi I’m Dave, I am a boxing coach with Giants and assist with pastoral care and mentoring in the region. I have been involved since 2016, to mentor and encourage youth to succeed in boxing and life.
In my day job, I work for Jetts Gym as a manager and I am passionate about the Christian faith, my family, sports chaplaincy and following Crystal Palace F.C.
The biggest lesson I have learnt as a mentor is, patience, as people progress over different time frames. In the future I aspire to help a growing number of athletes improve in their health, fitness, sport and understanding of God, who cares about their whole life.
Assistant Coach
Hi I’m Will, I am the assistant coach at Giants boxing gym and I work with the Cadets. I started boxing in 2018 for my general health and to have some fun, and have come through the classes to now be helping educate our next generation.
I am a boarding student at Lindisfarne, I love the outdoors and my other passion alongside boxing is Football.
I not only assist coach, but during my time I am continually learning and the biggest lesson I have learnt so far is “how to block a punch with your hands, not your face”, the future is looking bright and I will gain university entrance this year and move into studying towards my degree, I am looking to competing in tournaments this year to continue my boxing education.
Assistant Coach
Hi I’m Clint, I am one of the assistant coaches at Giants boxing gym and I have been involved with the Giants since the beginning, first boxed at the Flaxmere boxing academy with Craig in Storford Lodge, I got involved with Giants as I had used boxing for training previously and was looking for a good way to stay fit.
My life outside Giants, I am a small business owner with waste management & property care business, where we are specialists in landscaping and waste management, and I love spending time with my family, I have 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl.
I enjoy most sports, I play rugby, do cross fit and was a competitive boxer a few years ago.
Over the years I have learnt so many big lessons boxing and coaching within Giants, we have a great way of teaching valuable life lessons in so many areas, one I would highlight is the benefits of physical activity no only to myself, but to the students and how this helps them develop.
I am still have a few years left to get back in the ring, and mostly transitioning in to a coaching and supportive role in the gym. Keen to develop more coaching skills and develop in this area. I will be working towards becoming more of a support person, mentoring men & boys, as a male role model and someone to reach out to and talk should they need.
Assistant Coach
Hi I’m Alastair, I am one of the assistant coaches at Giants boxing gym and I have been involved with the Giants since the beginning, first boxed at the Flaxmere boxing academy with Craig in Storford Lodge, I got involved with Giants as I had used boxing for training previously and was looking for a good way to stay fit.
My life outside Giants, I am a small business owner with a building business where we are new builds and renovations specialists, I love spending time with my family, I have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, Braun 8, Kaitlyn 7, Mikayla 5 and Hadley 4.
I enjoy most sports, I played rugby and cricket growing up, I love surfing and I generally schedule work commitments around the surf forecast. Hunting fishing anything outdoors really.
There are far too many great lessons over the years I have learnt to name the biggest lesson, boxing and Giants have a great way of teaching valuable life lessons in so many areas. To highlight a couple maybe courage, friendship, resilience, humility.
I am working towards potentially getting back in the ring after a few years off, and mostly transitioning in to a coaching and supportive role in the gym. Keen to develop more coaching skills and develop in this area.
Assistant Coach
Hi I’m Chad, I am one of the assistant coaches at Giants boxing gym and I have been involved with the Giants for 10 yrs, I joined Giants to gain fitness, and have my son learn how to box along with all the other life lessons and benefits which go with being in a boxing club.
My work life started by getting a Certificate in Farming and working for 1year as a shepherd, then working 12 years as a meat worker before doing 5 years as a machine operator at Watties, then I re-entered education and parenthood and got an Accounting Degree when I was a stay home parent. I then did 4 months training as a taxation accountant, before getting a Diploma in Teaching and are currently Teaching for my third year at Ōtāne Primary school, in my spare time I enjoy hunting and spending time with my family.
The biggest lesson I have learnt so far is tolerance for others, the future is looking bright as I am guiding and helping my son, Patrick, and my daughter, Renee to be the best that they can be with their studies and career's (both Giants boxers).
I am working towards returning to farm my father’s farm, while teaching and I am working towards speaking TeReo fluently and are currently studying a Diploma in TeReo which I started last year.
